It was a very short announcement, but one that could have a very big impact on the global adoption of the LoRa low power wide areas (LPWA) connectivity. Semtech, the main provider of LoRa chips and IP, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China Unicom, one of the three state-owned MNOs, to collaborate on standardizing wireless network gateways and protocols, and jointly foster IoT ecosystem partners and use cases. Over in the USA, two operators in particular are making progress with roll-out – utility-focused Senet and machineQ, the Comcast machine-to-machine (M2M) division.
