Sun Cable, the solar megaproject planned for Australia’s Northern Territory which would export power to Singapore, has announced plans for a new factory which would produce the necessary 4,500 kilometers of submarine HVDC transmission cabling. The preferred site of this factory is Bell Bay, in Tasmania. Combined with the Xlinks cable factory receiving approval in July, we’re seeing a new industry segment take shape. While China is the clear global leader of HVDC transmission development and manufacturing, having localized technology which a decade ago was led by Germany, China’s HVDC lines (often as long as 3,000 kilometers) are overland projects.
