It became clear last year that the UK’s new 4G-based emergency services network (ESN) would not be ready to replace the existing TETRA-based system, Airwave, next year, as planned by the government. Now this has been confirmed, with UK authorities delaying the switch-off of Airwave for at least three years. The Home Office’s statement did not explicitly mention delays, but said the project would now be deployed “in phases” under a new “incremental approach”.
