Open RAN, and particularly the specifications set by the O-RAN Alliance, have taken an important role in the USA’s bid to become a 5G superpower, building its own industry while reducing the influence of China’s vendors. There was an initial burst of enthusiasm during the Trump administration, which was often highly unrealistic about how long it would take for a brand new architecture and ecosystem to become fully commercially ready.
