Vietnam will release its new Power Development Plan VIII, in the first quarter of this year. We have seen multiple drafts issued in the past year. In the meantime a policy vacuum has remained unfilled and fully 4.12 GW of onshore wind projects have been commissioned after the October 31st 2021 FiT deadline. Developers are petitioning for a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) extension having missed commercial operation. Moreover, the National Load Dispatch Center has declared that no new wind or solar plants will be granted approval in 2022, due to the entirely valid reason of grid constraints – the grid is rapidly growing but still hasn’t assimilated the 20 GW of renewables it suddenly acquired in 2020.
