The World Broadband Association (WBBA) is calling for the industry to adopt its Net5.5G Release 2 (R2) network architecture specification, to brace for the rise of AI-based traffic. While Net5.5G has merits on its own, we do not believe that the impact of AI-based traffic will be anywhere near the volume that the WBBA cites, but nonetheless network improvements must be made. Net5.5G is a product of the WBBA’s Working Group 4 (WG4). It initially published the specification back in March, having defined Net5.5G in a June 2024 paper.
