With the smart home chiefly in mind, Norwegian fabless maker of low power processors for IoT applications Nordic Semiconductor has acquired the WiFi division of UK Imagination Technologies Group. The company claims to be responding to customer demand, perhaps not surprising given its consumer target market where WiFi is already prevalent, but also indicates how the home and small enterprise IoT field is evolving generally. Nordic claims that the four IoT wireless suites it now offers are the most popular in its target domestic and light industrial sectors, that is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and WiFi, along with LTE-M and NB-IoT, the two cellular 4G low power WAN variants.
