M&A SoftBank Group is acquiring Ampere Computing, a major ARM-based CPU vendor that is focused on the data center and edge, for $6.5 billion. This silences rumors that Arm itself was going to buy Ampere, but still leaves the door open on whether Arm will make its own CPUs – or simply rely on a sister company to do so. The latter will upset fewer clients, at least. According to Bloomberg (usual caveat), BT has approached AT&T and Orange regarding an international partnership, which could constitute BT offloading its global wing (to focus on its domestic operations), but might extend to equity investments in a new vehicle.
