RAN Research
RAN Research forecasts disruption in wireless technology, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to stay on top of current trends and thinking among Mobile Network Operators.
This report includes precise technical discussions and clear projections for the rate of adoption of 5G-based broadcast alternatives – both 5G Broadcast (5G-B) and Multicast Broadcast Services (5G-MBS), as well as ATSC 3.0, DVB Native-IP (DVB-NIP), Advanced ISDB-T, and DTMB Advanced (DTMB-A).

Mobile broadcast is finally being deployed seriously in the 5G era, after two decades in a gestation marked by numerous false dawns and failed projects. This is already happening in the Netherlands, with several other major European countries, such as Germany and France, at least embarking on a journey that will conclude with 5G-B combined with multicast and unicast approaches – providing a more flexible hybrid platform capable of reaching mobile as well as fixed devices, over either legacy Over The Air (OTA) or cellular infrastructures.
5G-B has evolved as an alternative platform for traditional linear TV services, as they reach out increasingly to mobile devices. The appeal is that it only requires a software upgrade in some mobile handsets, unlike the hardware requirement of ATSC 3.0, while also exploiting various features of the cellular 3GPP standards for improved efficiency and performance on the client devices.
