Two of the imponderables around Iliad’s launch into Italy, is what will happen around fixed line broadband and video. It has promised to buy the RAN assets not required after the merging 3 Italia and Wind Communications, and then it plans to disrupt the market on price. In France Iliad’s Free used fixed line broadband, as second SSID’s in WiFi, to create a partially contiguous WiFi cloud across parts of France, and use this to offload cellular. It led to its now famous offer of €2 a day for cellular connectivity which has attracted 13 million subscribers. But it’s hard to see how it can repeat that in Italy, as it does not have a convenient 5 million home gateways…
