At this year’s Mobile World Congress, Telefónica took a leading role in the latest telecom operators’ project to open up their network APIs (application programming interfaces), in order to build a broad developer ecosystem and steal the digital services initiative back from the cloud and over-the-top giants. However, the attempt – supported by the GSMA’s Open API platform – is the latest in a long line of failed operator attempts to behave more like Internet companies.
