Nobody particularly likes patent pools, but they are generally preferable to expensive legal battles. This week, the Sisvel pool has announced a deal with Nordic Semiconductor, which will see Nordic Semi take a license for standard essential patents (SEPs) in Sisvel’s Cellular IoT pool. That pool covers LTE Cat-M (LTE-M) and Cat-NB (NB-IoT) patents, owned by 31 organizations. These include a number of operators: China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, KPN, NTT, Orange, SKT, Telefonica, and Verizon. Other licensors include BlackBerry, Dolby, Huawei, Sony, and ZTE. Notably absent are Nokia and Qualcomm, who are pursuing unilateral or bilateral licensing agreements instead.
