Nokia has claimed to have completed the first call using the 3GPP’s Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS) codec over a cellular network. With IVAS part of the looming Release 18, Nokia is branding this as ‘the biggest leap forward in the live voice calling experience since the introduction of monophonic telephony.’ This is a bold claim, and one that is difficult to agree with. Spatial audio in a call is an odd thing. Generally, the participants would be looking at each other, meaning there is little need for the positional function – nor a stereophonic audio track.
