5G RedCap is being positioned as the brand and technology set for future mid and high end 5G IoT use cases, and possibly eventually all of them. With the extended version (eRedCap) being introduced under 3GPP Release 18 this year, the two variants will between them serve emerging use cases and take over from those currently addressed by the various higher LTE Categories, although not yet the low bit rate NB-IoT designated as an LPWAN protocol. Growth will ramp up after commercial availability around 2025, with the two RedCap variants accounting for 30.17% of connections by 2030.
