Visitors to the recent IoT Solutions World Congress (ISWG) in Barcelona will have observed the field still struggling to appear as a coherent whole rather than a collection of niches or ghettos united only by IP connectivity and internet access. One problem is the title, since the wares on display were not strictly solutions to problems but an assembly of technologies, products and services, many of great value or interest in their own right admittedly. As the IoT rose to prominence over a decade ago it was initially presented as a great opportunity for synergy and convergence between different domains where the whole would gain more value than the sum of its parts.
