When we were “accidentally” invited to a BBC event in about 2004 we suggested to one of the directors that the BBC should sell content direct to consumers outside of the US, using something like the iPlayer. We got short shrift and were told to mind our own business. Quite right. Like most ideas, when it changes and becomes one of your own, it sounds a lot better, so once the iPlayer was perfected, and the idea of a global version of the iPlayer emerged internally, as a subscription service to quality BBC content, it was adopted enthusiastically.
