In 5G as in 4G, Verizon is to be narrowly pipped at the post to claim the title of first commercial operator, by a Nordic operator. The first fully commercial services on 4G were launched by TeliaSonera in Stockholm and Oslo. This time, Verizon has again been claiming it would be first, only to be outflanked by Elisa of Finland. However, it seems that Elisa’s claims rank with other ‘commercial 5G’ proclamations – based on limited services for special events (KT and SK Telecom at the Winter Olympics) or on live networks but no devices consumers could buy (several Gulf region MNOs).
