All the buzz around Edge Compute obscures the continuing investments being made in monolithic centralized data centers, galvanized by the computational and storage demands of AI workloads. Equinix, one of the major infrastructure companies, is latest to weigh in with a $15 billion investment in a US data center, in a joint venture with Singaporean wealth fund GIC and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments). The money will help Equinix accelerate its data center expansions, and also play catch up in the US, given that its latest xScale data centers supporting AI workloads are currently only available in Europe and Asia.
