Ericsson has become the first significant mobile equipment vendor to join the relatively new advocacy group for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA), to gain influence over spectrum allocation for Direct-to-Cellular (D2C) and IoT services. The MSSA itself was only formed in February by companies in the satellite field, such as Viasat as a platform operator and Ligado Networks. The aim was to promote, for MSSA, use L and S band spectrum that had already been allocated and licensed, amounting to 100 MHz in total, on the basis that this was well-suited for integration into a broad range of mobile devices.
