Ericsson’s Mobility Index has predicted that there will 29bn connected devices by 2022, of which some 18bn will be IoT devices. The Swedish network infrastructure provider appears to have regained some confidence, increasing its forecast for cellular IoT connections by more than double – up to 3.5bn by 2023, revising its previous outlook. 5G connections will hit 1bn by 2023, according to the report, however, Ericsson is also including legacy landline phones in this forecast. This is because its definition of a connected device is a physical object that has an IP stack and can perform two-way communication.
