The first major European trial of MBMS technology to deliver wireless multicast TV to handsets, will be set up by IP Wireless and MobiTV in the UK, backed by all the leading operators there, 3, Orange, Telefonica, and Vodafone. This is the beginning of an onslaught against datacasting services such as DVB-H, MediaFLO and T-DMB, which require a second lightweight network to be build around the cellular network. Datacasting also needs new licensed spectrum, whereas the IP Wireless TDtv system uses a Time Division Duplexed signal in the existing 3G spectrum.
