India’s state-owned telco BSNL has repeated earlier requests for more spectrum to propel its impending 5G service, slated for launch in August 2023. This would bring the country’s total of public service 5G operators to four, including the big two, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, alongside the smaller Vodafone Idea, which is itself 35.8% state-owned after the government acquired equity in return for paying off debts including previous spectrum payment instalments. There is one other 5G spectrum holder, Adani Data Networks, which secured 400 MHz of spectrum in the 26 GHz band, but the company insisted this was only for servicing its own networks and had no intention of entering the public 5G mobility market.
