The LoRa Alliance, guardian of the eponymous LoRaWAN long range wireless networking technology founded on the proprietary LoRa protocol and physical layer design, has unveiled a roadmap that in practice is designed to shore up its existing base against intrusion by cellular alternatives. The main focus appears defensive, being to emulate developments already occurring elsewhere in the wireless firmament, such as support for NTNs (Non-Terrestrial Networks), especially satellite, and over the air (OTA) updates. The alliance is also working on relay certification, which will increase coverage in noisy or physically challenging RF environments, allowing LoRaWAN sensors to be distributed more widely – bringing mesh-like functionality to the table.
