The Chinese Embassy in the US was forced to deny any official responsibility for cyber-attacks on US infrastructure and technology companies, including AT&T and Verizon. This comes soon after all three of the country’s big telcos and mobile operators, also including T-Mobile, had been fined for various security breaches of their own. Two separate Chinese groups have been implicated in the attacks with rather different targets and modi operandi: Salt Typhoon, and Volt Typhoon. AT&T and Verizon were targeted by the first of these, comprising malware installed in the rootkit of the Windows operating system on servers.
