It is becoming hard to separate competition from cooperation in the increasingly crowded field for platforms that combine 5G and AI functions. Nvidia initially launched its converged 5G/AI system to run with x86-based servers, but has now added chips based on the ARM architecture. This clears the way for Nvidia to develop its own integrated package, if competition regulators approve its proposed acquisition of ARM. If Nvidia succeeds in this quest, it will gain control of the intellectual property that dominates processors in smartphones, along with many other devices and embedded systems, where low power and heat consumption combined with significant processing capability are required.
