The State of the Union speech made by Jean-Claude Juncker President of the European Commission this week has many implications for the technology industries, but it came off as being anti-US and largely in favor of large European businesses, and at the expense of consumers. It was also wrapped in a fantasy that Europe wishes to promote competition – but it looks more like cronyism and the European Commission being bought by multinationals. The most ludicrous statement was to support 5G and call for it to be in place all across Europe by 2025. European operators are best left to judge the timing and investment needed for 5G – a misunderstood technology which means very different things in the US…
