Volkswagen has at last deployed a private 5G network at its main manufacturing plant in Wolfsburg in Germany after what seems like an endless series of pre-announcements dating back at least two years ,to well before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Neither Volkswagen nor Nokia, which has supplied the radio equipment and core for the project, use that as an excuse but admit to proceeding cautiously and still being in pilot mode. It may reflect Volkswagen’s determination to manage the network itself, with just initial support from Nokia, which in turn is majoring on private enterprise 5G in the hope of establishing leadership position there, outside China.
