Complete or partial collapse of buildings and other structures or edifices such as bridges, dams, and historical monuments, exacts a more significant economic and human toll than is sometimes realized. Among recent examples was the 2018 collapse of the Morandi road viaduct in Genoa, Italy, with 43 deaths and $450 million damage. This has led to investment in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), in an attempt to monitor conditions and predict when maintenance is needed. The aim is to anticipate and correct serious defects before damage occurs. Progress has been achieved at the sensing level to obtain more relevant measurements, but further advances rely on effective collection, aggregation and analysis of data.
