Although the winners in the USA’s recent C-band spectrum auction will not be revealed until its second phase (ongoing now) is completed, it appears that the largest cable operators have not been major spenders. It was very feasible that Comcast and Charter might invest in licensed spectrum in order to accelerate their 5G strategies and reduce their reliance on their MVNO agreement with Verizon. They have a joint approach to developing cellular networks and services – as well as for public WiFi – which could give them the scale to present a worrying challenge to the established MNOs.
