Behind the razzamatazz of obligatory OLED panel walls at CES 2023, major tectonic plates were sliding into place in the TV silicon space. Namely, the porting of MediaTek’s Pentonic chipsets in new TVs from both Philips and Sony – which will see the Versatile Video Codec (VVC/H.266) supported in commercially available standalone TV sets for the first time. First off, Philips’ 2023 range of OLED TVs will mark the arrival of VVC support in a major OLED panel manufacturer.
