UK regulator Ofcom has revised its guidance on the application of net neutrality in the country, giving operators more flexibility following an extensive review of the rules introduced in 2016. In a bid to “clarify” the interpretation of the rules, the regulator has allowed broadband and mobile providers to develop premium packages to enable offerings like low-latency gaming, as well as new ‘specialised services’, the use of ‘traffic management’ measures to circumvent network congestion at peak times, and allow the introduction “in most circumstances” of zero-rating packages – i.e. providing internet access at no cost for a particular app or set of apps.
