With sports rights prices inflating almost everywhere, rights fragmentation among OTT video services is the order of the day. Faultline was unshaken to hear that some attendees at SportsPro Madrid are reluctant to shake off the value of pay TV in Western markets. Faultline’s sister research service, Rethink TV, forecasts increasing media revenue rights for the top 16 sports leagues to reach $68.8 billion in 2028, rising from $45 billion in 2023. Moreover, Rethink TV predicts 2033 as the expiry date for pay TV sports, marking the larger shift to OTT platforms, when most major leagues such as the NFL and the NBA are set for major rights renegotiations.
