The HbbTV Association has issued an updated version of its Operator Application specification, HbbTV OpApp, boasting improved support for operator applications to render IP-delivered linear channels, as well as operator-managed UI elements. Importantly, the OpApp does not require for devices to be HbbTV compatible, which is important considering the sluggish embrace of the standard across Europe. The most recent data we have is from a Dataxis report on addressable advertising, which is arguably the main driver for adoption of HbbTV and IP-enabled DVB standards DVB-I (interactive) and DVB-T2 (second-gen terrestrial). This report estimates that, at the end of 2022, over half of German households were enabled with addressable-ready HbbTV devices.
