British public service broadcaster Channel 4 has announced its intention to go “digital-first” by 2030, with a “Fast Forward” five-year-plan aimed to accelerate its transition to the OTT video age. This is no small shift for the PSB, but we should point out that “digital-first” does not mean going fully IP six years from now. Channel 4 aims to make it half the journey to full IP video within this timeframe, when it projects generating half of its total revenue from digital offerings. Currently, that number sits at 27%. The move will require replacing monumental amounts of broadcast infrastructure and SDI equipment with IP components, a painstaking migration.
