In a boon for mobile communication applications, Eutelsat has completed the largest roll-out yet for its OneWeb low earth orbit (LEO) fleet, as part of a major backhaul deployment with Australian telco Telstra. The win is opportune for Eutelsat, having recently lamented poor performance for its LEO subsidiary OneWeb—in which Paris-based Eutelsat bought a majority stake in 2023. The project comes after a successful voice call on-air using OneWeb, which will replace existing satellite backhaul infrastructure in over 300 remote mobile base station sites, and will give Telstra access to new sites, expanding its mobile coverage.
