There is an ominous sense of urgency about the latest “Transmission Critical” report from UK comms regulator Ofcom. Warnings like “If no action is taken, the very existence of public service broadcasters (PSBs) will be threatened” are not typical regulator messages, and should therefore be considered symptomatic of not just a national emergency—but a global one. Ofcom admits there is no silver bullet to the woes of public service media. It does have some ideas though, including improved discoverability on platforms like YouTube, more ambitious partnerships among PSBs, and of course a healthy dose of streamlined regulation.
