Broadcom was the early leader in developing the HEVC video decompression chips that are needed by OTT and pay TV services to handle 4K streams coming into the home. At CES 2015 it showed two new SoCs which support both HEVC and Google’s VP9 open video compression standard, which is needed for playing Google’s YouTube 4K videos. The implementation supports up to 60 frames per second. Broadcom said the addition of the Google VP9 standard “will allow users to stream 4K YouTube content to their set-top boxes and display it on a TV” and provides up to 50% bitrate reduction for comparable quality, compared to the previous VP8 standard.
