Deutsche Telekom has proved to be a master of timing. It began building out vectored VDSL two or three years ago and said nothing. It set up supplier relationships to surround and improve on its IPTV Mediaroom pay TV system 3 years ago, but only this week launched a new Entertain TV platform, built primarily around hardware and software from its Chinese partner Huawei, just as it experienced falling returns from its first generation T-Entertain pay TV system. Elsewhere within its eco-system it boasts a self-funding US mobile operation, leading the US pack in terms of customer additions, and in broadband it has held its dominance in Germany, on the back of fiber and vectored VDSL.
