Dolby Laboratories has acquired WebRTC expert Millicast with the purpose of positioning scalability of high-quality live streams as a central selling point of its Dolby.io interactive events building platform. The integration is off to a cautious start, however. Millicast’s own marketing materials boast that its technology can cascade streams to 1 million concurrent viewers, with sub-second latency, while the Dolby announcement says Millicast enables developers to stream interactive live events to audiences of just 60,000, with latency of 500ms.
