We have known this for over a year, but it is satisfying to hear confirmation from the Ecoflow (Energy-Conserving Optimization for Future-ready, Low-impact Online Workflows) project that the “eco-mode” of Bitmovin’s player—introduced at IBC 2023—is useless. We are editorializing a bit here, but essentially, the project confirmed that bitrate reduction efforts—the focus of Bitmovin’s eco-mode—have no impact on reduction in energy consumption. This is but one of multiple conclusions from the project which has united broadcasters RTL, BBC and ITV behind Swedish app developer Accedo, analytics start-up Humans Not Robots (HNR), French peer-to-peer vendor Quanteec, and Bitmovin, with participation from German research institute Fraunhofer Fokus, plus collaborative measurement initiative Dimpact.
