We have been listening to Eutelsat tell us about how satellite can use the Broadpeak nanoCDN to stay in the OTT video race, since about 2013. The story has been faithfully repeated every year since – contract extensions, technical trials – but still there are no announced customers. Except Eutelsat, who in turn has no customers for the service it has created – Smartbeam. This week Eutelsat put out a white paper detailing how its Smartbeam technology works – essentially a form of Multicast-ABR – which works by encapsulating an IP based Adaptive Bit Rate stream into a DTH broadcast – and converting it back into an ABR stream at a key point in the network.
