The FCC has released its official figures for the number of broadband lines in the US last year, and says that 37.9 million residential and business broadband lines were installed in the US, up by 34% from last year’s 28.2 million. DSL lines went up 45% to 13.8 million, while cable broadband lines rose by 30% to 21.4 million lines. The rest, some 2.7 million lines, were provided by satellite, terrestrial wireless, powerline and other platforms. The FCC only counts lines that offer at least 200 kpbs. This is similar but not identical to the Telecommunications Industry Association numbers produced earlier this year that suggested that there were 26.9 million Cable modems and 12.6 DSL connections.
