Production virtualization played a significant role for Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) at the Paris Olympics, where they managed to replace traditional OB (Outside Broadcasting) vans with private cloud data centers for some events. This topic was discussed during the panel ‘Olympics 2024: Technology to Broadcast Beyond Expectations’ at IBC 2024. OBS production was conducted in 4K HDR/NGA (next-generation audio) using Intel infrastructure, with software applications provided by traditional appliance vendors, such as switchers, mixers, shaders, graphics, and contribution encoders. This live demonstration showed that a complete 4K live production can be achieved on virtualized infrastructure.
