Five years ago this week… Huawei pushed a bold target of 300 million HarmonyOS devices by the end of 2021. Despite claims of a ground-up OS, HarmonyOS looked largely like a reworked AOSP, repackaged to keep Huawei’s device ecosystem alive. Smart TVs, despite early launches, were a sideshow to smartphones, and global partners were wary of tying into Huawei’s stack. By the end of 2021, Huawei did announce it had hit 300 million HarmonyOS devices, split roughly between ~200 million Huawei devices and ~100 million third-party devices. However, a big chunk were upgrades, while the “third-party devices” bucket was loosely defined, often including IoT gear and partner devices in China.
