It was almost inevitable that Qualcomm, as the consummate chip maker in CDMA networks, would enter the chip market for one of the markets that it is keen to annex, that of mobile TV datacast services. It duly came into the market very late this week with a chip called the Universal Broadcast Modem, which is not quite universal, supporting as it does, just three of the world’s leading mobile broadcast standards, instead of all four. Predictably the one technology that is missing is T-DMB, which is mostly a technology driven by Samsung, Qualcomm’s long term Korean partner, and LG Electronics, with services already launched in Korea and some life, in the way of trials, happening in Europe.
