Roku has not suddenly entered the Smart Speaker business this week, not really, up against Amazon Echo and Google Home, but instead has launched a not so smart speaker system which works alongside its existing voice capabilities, to have more or less the same overall effect. This launch means that a Roku TV, or any Roku box or flash stick can have improved sound which is linked to its existing voice capabilities. What this says to us is that Roku is feeling that its base is being invaded by Google and Amazon Voice being used to control Roku boxes, and the TV sound being replaced by their speakers – essentially it is frightened of losing control of its own installations…
