Germany’s RTL has joined a growing list of broadcasters and operators starting to employ context aware encoding (CAE) to obtain extra efficiencies on top of codecs based on traditional technologies such as H.264 and HEVC. This has been done through its technical services subsidiary CBC, which has deployed an HTML5 video player platform from Austrian platform start-up Bitmovin. This is part of RTL’s TV Everywhere strategy to extend all premium content to connected screens with DRM enabled through the HTML5 Encrypted Media Extensions.
