ViacomCBS beefs up streaming in desperate bid to reach top table

Newly merged ViacomCBS has lost little time reinforcing the CBS All Access streaming service with the now freely-available Viacom assets, including the fast-growing ad-supported Pluto TV. The re-merger of Viacom and CBS has attracted the least attention of the big media consolidations that have taken place over the last two years, certainly outside North America, reflecting how the combined company will struggle to keep pace with the big hitters such as Netflix, Disney, Comcast and Amazon. These mergers have all been driven by the inexorable streaming tide ridden so effectively by Netflix on the SVoD front, while more recently the likes of DAZN and Disney’s ESPN+ have threatened to traverse an equally impressive trajectory in live sports.
