Forgent subsidiary Compression Labs seems to be suing everyone involved with making JPEG devices in the US because it appears to think that it owns the patent on it. A total of 31 companies have been named in the suit, most everyone that gets money from offering devices which can write JPEG files. Curiously however someone has made an error in naming the patent as number 4,698,672 said to be filed in 1986. Instead the patent entitled ‘Coding system for reducing redundancy’ and owned by Wen-hsiung Chen and Daniel Klenke was filed in 1987.
