A flurry of ATSC 3.0-related technology announcements were released to coincide with this week’s ATSC NextGen Broadcast Conference in Washington DC. Faultline was initially told that part of the event would be livestreamed to the public, but—ironically—those plans were shelved. More pressingly for the ATSC 3.0 community, the FCC has made no obvious progress in relaxing market ownership rules and sunsetting ATSC 1.0 in the top 55 markets to drive universal ATSC 3.0 adoption. Hopefully the DC event will shine some light on this elephant in the conference room. In the meantime, battle-hardened video technology vendors are continuing to innovate with new ATSC 3.0 product features covering encoding and security—with developments from Synamedia, V-Nova, and Ateme.
